Memorials

Brownie - was a quarter horse filly. She was barely 2 years old. She died in a horrible accident on July 4th, 1995. The combination of the fireworks and noise made her panic. She was the first horse on Wildhorse Ranch and the reason that we got into the Horse Rescue Business. All of the horses that have come to our ranch are a tribute to beautiful Brownie.

Grandma Sis - was a quarter horse with a registered name of Astaline, but nicknamed Sis. She was a team penner. Her owner was selling her for $300. WHR was in the process of trying to raise the money to buy her, when her owner asked us if we would consider retiring her at our ranch. Of course we said YES!!! She spent her last 4 months on the ranch, completely retired.

She was 26 when she came here, with a heart murmur, arthritis, an enlarged vein in her neck and bruises on all of her feet. We immediately called our farrier, who came out and put corrective pads on her. Julie, a professional horse woman, would come out and give Grandma Sis massages. Eventually, we had the pads and shoes completely removed from her.

Grandma Sis spent her last days, grazing in the corral, eating sweet feed, getting massages and doing what horses do best....looking beautiful. We lost Grandma Sis on January 28, 1999.

Apache - was an appolosa. He was over 17 hands tall. We 'horse sat' him when his owner was battling cancer. She eventually was able to take him back. He was a team penning horse and one day after a competion, Apache had a very severe reaction to something and we lost him. He was a true gentleman of horses.

Half Moon - Forest Service Quarter Horse that served the US Government his entire life. His good friend, Bill Barcus, made sure that Half Moon was allowed to retire at our ranch and live out the remainder of his days in comfort. /i/Horses/halfmoonicon.jpg

/i//Shermanbasket1.jpg Sherman - Orange and White male cat. 18 years old. Everyone at the ranch adored Sherman. In 2003, he won Cat Galaxy's Cutest Cat Contest. He was a cranky and loveable old man.

Duchess - a beautiful young filly that was separated from her mother at the sale pen. She was too young to be on her own and the auction did not provide her with proper water and food. She was so dehydrated but Susan Bozarth of Wildhorse Ranch Rescue at Rockin 7B ranch purchased the little filly. Everyone rallied around Duchess but it became apparent that no amount of money or love could save this young foal....the damage had already been done. We will never understand how people can be so cruel to animals, but we will continue to fight to save horses and foals in honor of Duchess and the other babies like her who never had a chance at the hands of humans.
Duchess came to WHRR with the other foals we rescued from the June 2004 round up.

/i//bc.jpg BC - a handsome 35 year old gelding with a beautiful disposition and kind heart was gently laid to rest on August 16, 2004. His caregiver, Cindy, loved him dearly. Thank you to Rae Morrow for her emotional and physical support for BC during his final days. Thank you to Roger Cardillo and Rhona Melsky for their financial and emotional support to this fine horse in need. Every sentient being deserves respect and kindness, not only throughout their lives, but especially at their final moments. BC died peacefully with Rae Morrow at his head whispering kind words in his ear and gently stroking his beautiful face. He knew he was most certainly loved.

Cindy and BC on his final day.

LaVonda - a retired Forest Service Mule. LaVonda was 33 years old and served a lifetime to the public with Bill Barcus, a range technician in Payson, Arizona. She retired to Wildhorse Ranch Rescue in 2000 with her long time campanion, Half Moon.

Thank you to the Wildhorse Ranch Feed Team, Volunteers, Board of Directors, Bill Barcus, Dr. Frank Preiser and Nancy Chernak for the support and care for LaVonda.

CEK - (pronounced Seek) - Cross Eyed Kitty

Sweetest feral cat that turned tame with the help of Arizona Animal Wellness Center. CEK was battling kidney failure. His best friend was Hermes, a loving Siamese with big blue eyes.

CEK was the subject of several art pieces....an orignal painting by Alicia Van Noy and a beautiful image of him drinking from a large metal water bucket by Joanne West Photography.

In the image at left, Hermes gives CEK a kiss on his head after CEK came home from the hospital.
